Matt and I, and our wives, actually took time this weekend to go see Terrence Malicks The Tree of Life. Its an absolutely fascinating film, but one that I think is really going to divide audiences. I really dont want to say too much about it, in the event that you go see it. Suffice it to say that Malick is attempting to show, in a highly visual way reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick, how everything in the universe is tied together and how the struggle between Nature and Grace has been playing out since the beginning of time even into our own daily lives. For my part, I was really blown away by it for about the first maybe 90 minutes. Malick uses the camera in really interesting ways, and stitches together little moments and visuals into a loose but moving narrative. But then, again for me at least, it seems as though he loses his way. The film starts to feel a little padded, and the symbolism Malick uses toward the end gets pretty heavy-handed. Still, for all that, its worth seeing for the visuals, for his interesting use of cinematic technique and for the fascinating discussion the film should spark afterwards. As for Super 8, havent seen it yet, but Im really looking forward to it. Hopefully, Ill be able to slip away for a screening some night this week.
